Spring semester
out-look The Appalachian State University Mountaineer Ice Hockey team kicks off the second semester with a duo of BRHC Carolina Division games, the second weekend in January against the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Seahawks. After going 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the Carolina Division during the fall semester, the Mountaineers will finish out their division schedule with two games against the Seahawks on Jan. 16 at 10:30 p.m. and Jan. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the Wilmington Ice House. With the Loss of forward, Nick Livy, to graduation—Livy graduated on Dec. 21 with a degree in finance, and is heading to Keystone, Colo. to work with Vail Resorts—and Defenseman, Zach Nelson, who will be taking the semester off to concentrate on his studies the Mountaineers will have to restructure the line up for the spring semester, but the addition of former Mountaineer Defenseman, Forthe Carson, who is transferring back to Appalachian State from Clemson University will help to ease the trouble of replacing the roster spots. With the shake-up in roster the Mountaineers will face new challenges in their largely non-division play in the spring semester. After their final Carolina Division games against the Seahawks the Mountaineers will have games against the University of South Carolina, Vanderbilt University, the University of Georgia and rematches against the University of North Carolina and Georgia Tech throughout January and February. Currently ranked 20th in the South, the Mountaineers will look to improve on their ranking in the next semester while they look forward to the BRHC Play-offs Feb. 20 to Feb. 22.
Mountaineers beat Wolfpack, head
to Charlotte
The Mountaineers split the series last year, winning the first game 7-5. The 49ers co-hosted the Charlotte Shootout earlier this season, but did not end up playing Appalachian. App State come into the weekend off two wins over the NCSU Wolfpack. The wins put the Mountaineers’ overall d3 record to 7-3. Both games were close going into the third. ASU won the first game 7-5, lead by the scoring of Captain Sal Blair and President Casey Krasen. The Mountaineers would score 7 goals again the next night but victory would not come as easy. The Mountaineers thought they had the game won when they scored with 45 seconds left to make the game 6-5, but with 15 seconds left and the goalie pulled, NCSU tied the game. Overtime was not enough to decide the match, but featured great saves by goaltender Tommy Fitts and big hits from both sides. After NCSU scored on the first shot of the shootout, ASU would score three in a row to win the game 7-6. Appalachian State is now 3-1 in the BRHC Carolina division. The team could go as high as 5-1 this weekend, a nice thought heading into exams.
