CHARLOTTE - The Appalachian State University Club Hockey team defeated the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Sunday in the final match of the second annual Charlotte Shootout.

The Mountaineers beat out North Carolina State, The Citadel and Florida State to make it to the championship game. The tournament was co-hosted by Appalachian State and the University of North Carolina Charlotte and held at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trails.

Out-scoring their competition 34 to 14, the Mountaineer’s only competition came in the final against UNCW. A tightly played game through the second period, UNCW led 3-2 going into the third period when an onslaught of UNCW penalties allowed the Mountaineers to take advantage of their strong power play and finish out the game with a 6-4 win.

The Charlotte Shootout is the first of two November tournaments for the Mountaineers.

Next the Mountaineers will travel to Hillsborough to compete in the Carolina Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Along with UNC the mountaineers will face Georgia Tech and Old Dominion University in a round robin style tournament.

The Mountaineer’s first game will be held 7 p.m. at the Triangle Sports Plex in Hillsborough.
