Wildcats Show Some Grit Win in Shootout 8-7 It was Family Night when Johnson & Wales hosted George Mason for an Atlantic Division game Oct. 23. The family – some 800 members strong – had a rollicking good time and went home happy when JWU won 8-7 in a shootout, boosting its won-lost record to 2-3. Johnson & Wales rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to go ahead 7-6, only to see GMU score a shorthanded goal with 41 seconds left in regulation play after pulling its goaltender to force the game into overtime. After five scoreless minutes, the teams went at it in the shootout. Josh Trovato netted the winning goal. JWU’s Eric Kennal scored twice and assisted on two other goals in regulation play, then added a goal in the shootout. Teammate Marco Jordan had a hat trick and Michael Green and Bobby Brewster added a goal each. GMU was led by Matt McVay, who scored three times and set up another goal. John Freeman, Erik Gibbons, Don Liberature and Chris Shrieves got the other GMU goals.
Wildcats go 1-1 in Weekend Series
Updated: 10/13/2009 at 9:48 PM
With a slow start to the season the Wildcats looked to bounce back
against two very familiar rivals from a season ago in UNC-Charlotte and
Wake Forest. With the first two games being penalty filled the Wildcats
came out and played two very disciplined games agianest both opponents.
Key injuries to the lineup didnt damper the Wildcat plays from playing
hard for both contests with Logan Hester (Shoulder), Tom Simpson (MCL),
and Justin Matthews (shoulder) all out with injuries.
In the first game the wildcats faced off agianst in city rivals
UNC-Charlotte a game in which everybody was anticipating to be a good
battle and it was. The first period ended with the two clubs deadlocked
at zero, but in the second period the Niners scored three times to go
ahead of the visiting wilcats 3-0 at the second intermission. In the
third penalty trouble cost the Wildcats a 5-3 powerplay goal and that
would end the game with a 4-0 lose.
The next game turned out to be a much better outcome for your wildcats
as they put up a shoting gallary from the outset. The first goal was
scored by freshman Mike Green less than two minutes into the game and
also tallied an assist in the game as well. They would not stop there
with goals from second year players Eric Kendall with 3 goals and 2
assists, Ryan Gnieser and Marco Jordan netting 2 goals and 2 assists,
and Josh Trovato scoring a pair of goals as well. Tim Pettit stopped 24
of 26 shots is his first career win. With solid play in these two games
gives the wildcats a boost going into a week off then on to a tough
game against GMU Patriots on family weekend.
