Niners' are Carolina Division Champs!!!
Finish Season at 24-5-0!!!

The Niners beat Appalachian State 13-3 Friday night to open the play-offs in front of an awesome crowd at the Extreme Ice Center where both teams call home. It was a penalty filled game between the two rivals but the Niners delivered a good old fashion smack down, never letting ASU into the game.

On Saturday, the Niners traveled up to Lynchburg, VA to play The College of Charleston who was sporting a 15 game winning streak. The Niners ended the first period up 2-0 in a period with no penalties for either team. "That just doesn’t happen between these two teams who genuinely don’t like each other” said Coach Greg Hartley. "Both teams were just that focused” he said. At the end of the 2nd, it was 4-0 and the Niners eventually beat them 4-1 for the Carolina Division Championship.

On Sunday, the Niners played the Atlantic Division Champs, Liberty University, but came up just short for a 4-3 loss, one of only 5 losses in 29 games. The locker room was still filled with pride, winning the Carolina Division for the first time and excited about next season.

The Niners only lose two seniors but they are truly impact players, both are Alternate Captains and both will be sorely missed. Darrell Prantera, a Canadian, is a true and blue hockey player. "He eats, breathes and sleeps hockey” said Coach Tom Aukskalnis. "He’s an athlete with a relentlessness desire to win and he’s extremely tough to play against” he said. The other senior is Steve Carbone who is described simply as a warrior. He’s been a regular scoring leader year after year because of his magical hands but also because of his punishing style, "he’s a textbook power forward” said President Dave Nelson……who spent a good part of the season taping and bandaging up Carbone for nicks and cuts all year. GM Alan Morgan mentioned that "we are fortunate to only lose two players to graduation, but it will take 4 players to replace them”.

The Niners wish both Prantera and Carbone all the best and thank them for the memories, the commitment and the leadership they provided all season.

Niners Set New Record to 20-4 with Two Big Road Wins!!!

The #13 ranked Niners took a team bus up to Baltimore Friday night to play #6 Loyola and came away with a huge 2-1 win. The Niners had to shake off the "bus-rust” and were down 0 – 1 after the first period. In the second, they scored twice and really got their legs back. Steve Walsh and George Boukas both scored in what turned out to be the last of the scoring. In the third, the Niners shut down the powerful Loyola squad with another stellar performance by goaltender Craig Mohr. "He was the best player on the ice” said Coach Greg Hartley. "That includes their team too” he said. It was a tremendous battle but the Niners played with desperation and just wanted it more.

Saturday night, the team drove down to Richmond to play Virginia Commonwealth University. Colin Wilson scored 52 seconds into the game which gave the whole team a big sigh of relief after such a close game the night before. But it turned out to be just as close, just as intense and there could be no letting down. Darrell Prantera put in the second goal with an awesome pass from Wilson but VCU scored to make it a one goal game. And that’s how it ended, again, 2-1 in favor of the Niners.

The wins were extremely important because that was the last weekend for games to be included in the final rankings. "The Niners beat all expectations so far and deserve to be ranked in the top ten, we find out at the end of this week” said Coach Tom Aukskalnis. "It was a weekend to remember, the two wins, the tour through DC, the fun on the bus. We saw, Miracle, Mystery Alaska and Slap Shot (twice), the whole trip just could not have been any better” he said.

The Niners play before the AHL Checkers game at Time Warner Cable Arena this Sunday against cross town rival Johnson & Wales, time to avenge one of only 4 losses; should be good.

Niners Move to 18 - 4

The Niners rattled off 5 wins in a row as they aim to improve their ranking from 13th to 10th in the South. After knocking off #10 ranked Richmond University, the Niners went to Atlanta and beat the University of Georgia in an awesome 6-5 shoot-out and then the next night, beat Georgia Tech 8-1.

Niners’ GM Alan Morgan said "the Niners are playing their best hockey of the season, possibly ever”. Head Coach Tom Aukskalnis agreed and stated "we could have beaten ANY team that night we beat Georgia Tech….ANY team”.

The following weekend, the Niners beat Wake Forest on the road 10-3 and the next night, beat them again at home 11-2. It was the first home game since October 28th and the Niners and their crowd really soaked it in. Coach Greg Hartley couldn’t believe the flow of the game, how the Niners rolled 4 lines regardless of PP’s or PK’s, "it was like I was hitch-hiking, not coaching” he said.

This coming weekend, the Niners are taking a team bus to Loyola University in Maryland which is currently ranked #6 in the South. A win there Friday night would almost certainly get the Niners into the top ten. Then on Sat, they travel to Richmond to play Virginia Commonwealth University.

The following two weekends, the Niners play 3 games, all at home, to close out the regular season. The play-offs will then soon follow and should be quite competitive!!!

Niners Start 2nd Half of Season Strong…..now 14 & 4

The Niners have won 2 or their first 3 games on the road to start the second half of the season. On Friday, the Niners lost 7-6 to Richmond University but beat them on Sunday at the RBC, 3-1. Richmond is ranked #10 in the South and the Niners are now ranked #13…….their highest ever. On Saturday, the Niners beat the Hurricanes 2-1 in a closely matched battle.

The Niners are on the road again this coming weekend to play The University of Georgia on Friday and Georgia Tech on Saturday. Both teams are going to be tough opponents and the Niners will have to be playing some of their best hockey to beat them.

Focus Rises at UNCC for 49ers Hockey Team
by: Andrew Stark (University City News)

If you were to ask the average UNC Charlotte student their opinion on 49ers athletics, most would have something to say.

They might talk about the basketball team or the progress on the new football stadium. But not many of them would mention how the Charlotte hockey team is near the top of the standings in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

The 49ers sit atop the Carolina Division and play against such area teams as Appalachian State, Elon, The Citadel, Wake Forest and the College of Charleston.

Niner's Finish 1st Half of Season at 12-3-0
Written: 11/20/11

The Niners have won 4 or their last 5 games for a strong finish to the first half of the season. After winning 2 divisional games on the road against the College of Charleston, they traveled to Raleigh and won 2 out of 3 games in an annual tournament with both D2 and D3 teams.

The Raleigh weekend started with the D2 North Carolina State squad. The game was tight and half way through the 3rd period, it was 4 – 4. Then the Niners were called for a 5 minute major along with a game DQ. Within a minute, they were again called for another 5 minute major and a game DQ. The calls were beyond questionable and gave NCS a 5 on 3 for 5 minutes. NCS won 6–4.

Saturday night, the disgruntled Niners took it out on divisional opponent Appalachian State and beat them soundly 10 – 5. Cole Johnson got the win in net and Trey Anderson got a hat-trick. Andrew Morgan and Darrell Prantera both had 2 goals apiece.

Sunday morning, the Niners played D2 University of North Carolina and beat them 3 – 2 in a very closely matched game. Chapel Hill pulled their goalie for the last minute and a half and it was total chaos in front of the Niners net. Bodies were flying everywhere as the Niners fought tooth and nail for the win. Craig Mohr was stellar in net and ended up being the best player on the ice during the 6 on 5. Chris Dembofsky had 2 goals and a helper in his last college game, he graduates in Dec. "Dembo was the ultimate warrior, he played like a big, confident senior that knew just how to carry this team, his presence on the ice will be sorely missed” said Coach Tom Aukskalnis. "What an awesome way to finish a hockey career, Dembo will never forget this game” said Coach Greg Hartley.

The Niners wish him the best!!!

Charlotte takes 2 wins on road trip!

Friday, defensmen, Jamie Rowsell and Colin Wilson helped the 49ers overcome Charleston's 5-2 lead in the 2nd period to win in a shootout. Wilson had two goals and two assist, including one of the shootout goals; Rowsell tallied a goal and two assist and earned the team's game puck with his play in both ends. On Saturday, forwards Stephen Carbone scored two goals (three goals for the weekend) and Andrew Morgan and Trey Anderson each scored to pull the 49ers out of a 2-0 deficit for the win.

Craig Mohr played all 125 minutes in net to earn the wins as Charlotte improves to 10-2 overall, 6-1 BRHC Carolina.

Niner's Post an 8-1 Start for the Season

After an 8 – 7 loss to Johnson & Wales, the Niners bounced back with two divisional away wins against The Citadel. The first game was a 6 – 2 victory with Steve Carbone netting 2 goals and an assist and Colin Wilson getting 3 helpers. The Niners were down 2 – 0 when Jamie Rowsell started the scoring with a power play goal and the Niners scored the next 5 goals. Niners GM Alan Morgan was impressed with the team’s composer, "after down 2 – 0, the Niners scored the next 6 as if that was the plan all along” Morgan said. Craig Mohr was stellar in net for a well deserved win.

In the second Citadel game, the Niners won 10 – 3 in an extremely rough battle. There were a total of 28 penalties including 3 game misconducts. Again, the Niners kept their composer…….somewhat……and kept shooting and scoring. They scored 3 power play goals to Citadel’s 1. In the second period, Steve Carbone scored a natural hat trick, three goals in a row and also had an assist. He had 7 points for the weekend. Steve Walsh had 2 goals and an assist, Trey Anderson had 3 assists, Andrew Morgan had a goal and 2 assists, Alex Kelson, Darrell Prantera and Alex Gold all had a goal and an assist. Play maker Colin Wilson added 2 more assists totaling 5 for the weekend. "Reggie Haskett was a beast all weekend and he was pretty much in every Citadel’s grill” said team president Dave Nelson. The game ended with a crushing check by Ben Stabbe that got the whole team standing and yelling which capped off an awesome weekend. Goaltender Cole Johnson got the win in a game that lasted almost 3 hours……not an easy task for any goalie.

This Friday, Oct 28th, the Niners host NC State at 10pm at the Extreme Ice Center. NC State plays in a division above the Niners and will be a huge test. "We had a broken rib, stitches and a game ending shoulder injury from the Citadel games so we’ll see what we’re made of, should be fun” said coach Tom Aukskalnis.

Niners' Start Season with 6-0 Record!

After defeating Chapel Hill and Kennesaw State in their first weekend of play, the Niners continued their strong play by beating Division opponent, Elon University twice the following weekend.

"Elon came out strong and was surprisingly physical” said Coach Tom Aukskalnis. Last season, they were certainly fast, but this year, they’ve added some big hitters to their squad. The Niners matched their play and scored 7 goals for a 7 – 4 victory in the first game. The next night, Elon tightened up their defense and forced OT and then a shoot-out. Colin Wilson put the first shoot-out goal in and Joey Delvacchio put in the second. Niners goalie Cole Johnson stopped both of Elon’s shoot-out attempts for the win.

The following weekend, the Niners hit the road to play Clemson University and after two periods, the Niners were down 2 – 0. But in the third, the Niners scored 5 unanswered goals for a 5 – 2 win. The following night, the Niners went to Kennesaw State for a rematch and scored in the last few minutes on a power-play goal to seal a 4 – 3 victory. It was a tight game with some huge hits. Andrew Morgan had a big night with 4 points and Niners’ goalie Cole Johnson came up big as Kennesaw pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.

The Niners play across town rival Johnson & Wales Sun, Oct 16, at the Time Warner Cable Arena. The AHL Checkers play at 3:00pm and the Niners vs J&W’s game is right after at 7:00pm. "Should be a fun and exciting game with a huge crowd” says Niners GM Alan Morgan.

Niner's Defeat Chapel Hill in Home Opener!

Friday night, UNC Charlotte played UNC Chapel Hill in their home opener at the Extreme Ice Center (XIC) in Indian Trail, NC. Attendance was awesome with an estimated 250 in the crowd to see what’s turning out to be quite a rivalry. The Tar Heels play in a division above the Niners but play each other twice a year.

Last season, the Niners beat the Tar Heels in the final regular season game for their first win against them in 8 tries. After Friday’s win, Coach Tom Aukskalnis told the Niners "we call this a streak”. Maybe, maybe not, but the win was huge. The Niners have 9 new skaters on the team and not knowing how big the game was, not knowing what was at stake may very well have helped. Although Coach Tom has an extremely loose and fun locker room, the veteran players knew this was going to be a battle.

Will Haskett opened the season scoring half way through the first period with a blast from the point. Will is some 10 years older than all the Niners and has been renamed simply as Reggie. In the cult-hockey-move "Slap Shot”, Reggie Dunlap, played by Paul Newman was the old man, player-coach, star of the movie along with the Hanson brothers. Reggie, one of the new players, got the game puck for a surprisingly strong performance and opening the season with his first collegiate tally.

30 seconds before the 1st period ended, Alex Kelson scored with an assist from Colin Wilson. Kelson also assisted on Reggie’s goal along with Andrew Morgan. It was 2-1 at the end of the 1st period.

In the 2nd period, the game tightened up and only one goal was scored. Steve Carbone was streaking, just screaming down the right side and put it top shelf where mama keeps the peanut butter. It was electrifying and the crowd went nuts. It was a game changer and the game winner. Trey Anderson and John Angelesco, both new players, assisted on Carbone’s goal.

In the 3rd period, the Niners killed off a 5 on 3 and then immediately scored. Carbone took the puck end to end and beat the Tar Heels goalie with a nice unassisted shake-and-bake deek for his 2nd of the game. Wilson scored for his 2nd point of the game assisted by Dylan Stultz and Trey Anderson scored for his second point of the game assisted by Steve Walsh.

Niners’ goalie Cole Johnson got the win with a stellar performance. He stopped 41 shots out of 44 and two of those goals were shot-handed in the last 30 seconds of the game. Coach Mitch Hodgkiss enjoyed his first game on the Niners’ bench and was thoroughly impressed with Johnson’s glove. "Anytime a goalie makes a glove save, there’s no rebound and that’s what all coaches and players want” said Hodgkiss. It was a 6 – 3 win against a quality team and a great start for the Niners’ season.

 Niner's battle Kennesaw State for a 'W'

Saturday night, the Niners laced’em up again to play Kennesaw State at the XIC. Coming off a big win against Chapel Hill, there was a risk of a big let down and that’s exactly what happened. The Niners went into the locker room after the 1st period down 0 – 3. Nothing tactically was changed, no lines were changed, we just needed to "get our heads on straight” said Aukskalnis.

In the 2nd, the Niners scored 3 times to tie it up. Steve Walsh opened the scoring with an assist from Alex Kelson. Darrell Prantera then tipped in a blast from Reggie at the point. Then with 39 seconds left in the 2nd, Walsh put in another huge goal, a power-play goal, assisted from Andrew Morgan and Jamie Rowsell.

The locker room was different after the 2nd, there was energy in the room and no ones heads were hanging. The Niners were back in this game and the line of Prantera/Craig/Joey Delvacchio was the reason. Their unrelentless pursue of the puck, their forechecking and hustle pumped the whole team up.

In the third, there was only one goal, a power-play goal by the Prantera/Craig/Delvacchio line. Craig put in the game winner with assists from Morgan and Colin Wilson.

Prantera got the game puck and Craig Mohr got his first win in his first game in net for the Niners. It was a well fought 4 – 3 win and as GM Alan Morgan stated, "it showed a lot of character coming back from a 0 – 3 deficit”.

The Niners play Friday night in Greensboro in a divisional game against Elon University and then come back to XIC for another game at home with Elon.
